Talanta Stadium Scandal? Auditor General Flags KSh10.85 Billion Cost Inflation

    ASAL POST | Sports

A new report by the Office of the Auditor-General Kenya has revealed that the construction cost of Talanta Sports Stadium along Ngong Road may have been inflated by at least KSh10.85 billion.

The audit raises serious concerns over unexplained price variations in the construction of the 60,000-seater facility. According to the findings, the method used to award the tender allegedly violated procurement laws, and clearance from the Office of the Attorney-General of Kenya was not sought before the contract was issued.

Initially, the National Treasury Kenya had approved KSh35 billion for the project under a six-year payment plan, with funding to be drawn from the Sports and Arts Social Development Fund (SASDF). However, auditors flagged an unsupported cost variation of KSh10.85 billion pushing the total projected cost to KSh45.85 billion.

The report further questions the project’s financial transparency, noting that key details of the funding model were not availed to auditors. Auditor General Nancy Gathungu indicated that only a special audit would conclusively determine whether taxpayers are receiving value for money.

Talanta Stadium is being developed to meet standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and is expected to serve as a premier venue for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027), alongside hosting major sporting events. Beyond football, the stadium is projected to host concerts, cultural festivals, and national celebrations positioning it as a key pillar in Kenya’s sports and creative economy.

With the latest revelations, scrutiny is likely to intensify over one of Kenya’s most ambitious sports infrastructure projects.
