CARDIFF, UK – August 16, 2026 – The new English football season gets underway on Sunday with a heavyweight Community Shield clash between Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

The match, scheduled for 5pm EAT, will be closely watched as it marks Enzo Maresca’s first competitive game as Manchester City manager following the departure of long-serving boss Pep Guardiola.

For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the fixture provides an early opportunity to assess his reigning Premier League champions ahead of their title defence.

Maresca Begins New Manchester City Era

Maresca faces an immediate challenge as he takes charge of City following Guardiola’s decade-long tenure.

The Italian knows the club well, having previously managed Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad before joining Guardiola’s coaching staff.

He later managed Parma, Leicester City and Chelsea, winning promotion with Leicester and securing the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea before returning to Manchester City as Guardiola’s successor.

His first competitive assignment, however, comes with City undergoing significant changes.

Several experienced players have departed, while the future of Rodri remains uncertain amid reported interest from Barcelona. Maresca has confirmed that the midfielder has returned to training following back surgery but has remained cautious over his availability and future.

Despite the changes, Maresca has made it clear that City will approach the Community Shield with the intention of winning rather than treating it as a pre-season friendly.

    Arteta’s Arsenal Enter With Stability

Arsenal arrive in Cardiff as the reigning Premier League champions after ending their 22-year wait for the English top-flight title.

Arteta’s side also reached the Champions League final last season, further underlining the progress made under the Spanish manager.

Unlike Maresca, Arteta has the advantage of continuity, having spent several years developing Arsenal’s tactical identity and squad.

Several key players are available for the Community Shield, including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Ødegaard.

However, Arsenal will be without William Saliba, who remains sidelined with a back injury, while Jurrien Timber continues his recovery from a groin problem.

Tactical Battle Could Decide the Game

The biggest question surrounding City will be how quickly Maresca can impose his tactical ideas on a team accustomed to Guardiola’s football.

While City’s possession-based approach is expected to remain a key feature, Maresca is likely to introduce his own tactical interpretation.

That will face an immediate test against an Arsenal side known for its pressing, territorial control and ability to exploit spaces when opponents attempt to build from the back.

City, meanwhile, will look to exploit Arsenal’s defensive structure through their attacking quality, with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden among the players capable of changing the game.

    Arsenal and City’s Recent History

The two clubs have developed a fierce rivalry in recent seasons.

Arsenal won the 2023 Community Shield after a 1-1 draw, defeating City 4-1 on penalties after Leandro Trossard scored a late equaliser.

City have since enjoyed the upper hand in some key encounters, including a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the 2026 League Cup final and a 2-1 Premier League win in April.

Their previous league meeting ended in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates.

    Community Shield Returns to Cardiff

The 2026 Community Shield will be played at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, marking the first time since 2006 that the fixture has been staged away from Wembley.

The move follows the unavailability of Wembley due to pre-planned concerts.

Principality Stadium previously hosted the Community Shield six times between 2001 and 2006.

Sam Barrott will referee Sunday’s encounter, with VAR also in operation.

    Early Test for Maresca

Arsenal arguably enter the contest with the advantage of greater stability and confidence following their historic Premier League triumph.

City, meanwhile, have the individual quality and experience to compete for every major trophy but begin a new chapter under Maresca.

Although the Community Shield will not determine the Premier League title race, Sunday’s clash could offer an early indication of how quickly City can adapt to life after Guardiola — and whether Arsenal are ready to defend their crown.
