Weeks after missing the FIFA World Cup due to a U.S. entry denial, Somalia’s trailblazing referee is set to make history as the first non-European official to oversee the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa.

SALZBURG, Austria, August 12, 2026 – Somali international referee Omar Artan says he is “really proud” as he prepares to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, becoming the first non-European referee to take charge of the prestigious annual fixture between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Aston Villa.
The historic appointment comes just weeks after the 34-year-old was forced to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite being selected by FIFA’s Referees Committee. Artan was denied entry into the United States upon arriving at Miami International Airport, ending his World Cup dream before the tournament began.
Reflecting on the difficult experience, Artan admitted the disappointment was immense but said the support he received from football fans around the world kept him motivated.
“It was a very tough period. A lot of people had sympathy for me because when someone has worked for many years and is supposed to achieve something, then cannot do it, it is very challenging,” Artan told UEFA.
Despite the setback, UEFA handed the Somali official one of the biggest appointments in European football, a move widely viewed as recognition of his professionalism, resilience and outstanding performances on the international stage.

Artan said officiating the UEFA Super Cup is a dream come true for him and his family.
“I was lucky, but I have worked very hard to be here and I’m really proud. As you can imagine, I grew up in a difficult situation, but it didn’t prevent me from pursuing my dreams,” he said.
His appointment adds another remarkable chapter to a career filled with historic milestones. In 2024, Artan became the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and he has since established himself as one of Africa’s leading match officials.
