Ocean Stars Triumph 4-2 on Penalties After 0-0 Deadlock to Secure AFCON 2027 Progress.

Somalia have booked their place in the next stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) PAMOJA 2027 qualifiers after edging Mauritius 4-2 on penalties following a goalless second leg on Tuesday.

    Deadlock Across Two Legs

With the first leg also ending 0-0 in Mozambique, the tie remained finely balanced over 180 minutes. Mauritius, playing at home at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex, struggled to convert their chances, extending a winless run, while Somalia maintained defensive discipline and composure under coach Yusuf Ali Nur. Both encounters mirrored each other tight, cautious, and intensely competitive leaving no room for error.

    Penalty Shootout Decides the Winner

With the score locked at 0-0, the match went to penalties. Somalia held their nerve, converting four spot-kicks, while Mauritius faltered, missing two crucial penalties.

The Ocean Stars’ composure under pressure sealed a dramatic 4-2 shootout victory and sparked celebrations as they secured progression to the next round.

    Somalia’s Rising Confidence

The result highlights Somalia’s steady rise on the continental stage, showcasing resilience, organisation, and mental strength in crucial moments.

For Mauritius, the campaign ends in disappointment despite home advantage in the return leg.

    Looking Ahead

Somalia now advance to the next phase of AFCON 2027 qualifiers, joining other nations in the race for a place at the finals, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

After two goalless clashes, it was a test of nerves and Somalia proved they had the mentality to thrive under pressure.
