Somali referee earns major assignment as international football continues to recognise his outstanding rise.

    KUWAIT FLAG

Mogadishu, SOMALIA – Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been appointed to officiate the Kuwait Premier League final between Kuwait SC and Qadsia SC on June 29, marking another major milestone in his career weeks after missing the opportunity to take charge of matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment by the Kuwait Football Association offers Artan a significant platform to return to the international spotlight after his World Cup dream was cut short by entry challenges that prevented him from travelling to one of the tournament’s host countries.

The Kuwait Premier League final is among the most prestigious fixtures in the country’s football calendar and the decision to hand Artan the assignment reflects the continued confidence in his ability, experience and professionalism.

WORLD CUP OPPORTUNITY ENDED BY TRAVEL CHALLENGE

Artan had been selected among the referees for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a historic achievement for Somali football and a personal career breakthrough for the highly rated official.

His selection had generated excitement among football supporters in Somalia and across the world, with many viewing it as a major moment for a country that has had limited representation at the highest level of global football.

However, his hopes of officiating at the tournament came to an end after he was denied entry into the United States, one of the host nations, despite travelling with the necessary documents required for the trip.

The incident attracted widespread attention within the football community, with officials, supporters and sports organisations expressing disappointment over his absence from the global competition.

Despite missing the tournament, FIFA recognised Artan’s contribution during the preparation period and confirmed that he would receive the compensation allocated to referees selected for the World Cup.

KUWAIT ASSIGNMENT A SHOW OF CONFIDENCE

The latest appointment demonstrates that Artan remains highly regarded within international football circles.

By selecting him to oversee the Kuwait Premier League final, football authorities have shown their trust in his ability to manage a high-pressure encounter involving two of Kuwait’s biggest clubs.

The match between Kuwait SC and Qadsia SC will provide Artan with another opportunity to showcase his officiating standards on a major stage.

Artan has spent several years building his reputation through assignments in regional and continental competitions, earning recognition from football governing bodies in Africa and beyond.

His performances have seen him rise among the respected referees in international football, inspiring many young athletes and officials in Somalia.

For many Somali football fans, Artan’s journey represents determination, professionalism and the ability to compete at the highest levels of the sport.

His World Cup selection was celebrated as a historic achievement, highlighting the growing recognition of Somali talent within global football structures.

    MORE INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGES AHEAD

Despite missing out on the World Cup, Artan’s international journey continues with more prestigious assignments ahead.

The Somali referee has also been selected to officiate the UEFA Super Cup later this year, a high-profile fixture that will bring together two of Europe’s leading clubs.

The Kuwait Premier League final now adds another important chapter to Artan’s career as he continues to represent Somalia on the international football stage.

His latest appointment serves as a reminder of his resilience and the continued confidence placed in him by football authorities around the world.
