From Ghana’s Benjamin Asare to Curaçao’s record-breaking Eloy Room, the men between the posts are becoming the unexpected heroes of football’s biggest stage.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup was expected to be dominated by superstar forwards and creative midfielders, but the tournament’s biggest stories so far are being written by the players wearing gloves.

Across the competition, goalkeepers have delivered remarkable performances, producing match-winning saves, historic displays, and moments that have transformed their nations’ campaigns. From Ghana’s Benjamin Asare to Cabo Verde captain Vozinha, DR Congo’s Lionel Mpasi, and Curaçao’s Eloy Room, the shot-stoppers have emerged as some of the tournament’s standout performers.

    Benjamin Asare: Ghana’s New Wall

Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has quietly become one of the biggest revelations of the tournament. The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper made history by becoming the first goalkeeper from the Ghana Premier League to start a World Cup match for the Black Stars, doing so against England.

After coming on as a substitute in Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama, Asare made three crucial saves to protect the lead before producing another outstanding display in the goalless draw against England.

Despite England controlling nearly 79 per cent possession and recording 19 shots, Asare and Ghana’s defence stood firm, with the goalkeeper making three important saves to secure a valuable point against one of the tournament favourites.

Before Asare’s heroics, another African goalkeeper had already announced himself on the world stage.

At 40 years old, Cabo Verde captain Vozinha delivered a performance for the ages in his country’s historic World Cup debut against Spain.

In a dramatic 0-0 draw, Vozinha produced seven saves, including six from inside the penalty area, earning a remarkable 9.7 Sofascore rating. His display helped Cabo Verde earn a result few expected and gave the debutants belief that they could compete with the world’s best.

Lionel Mpasi: DR Congo’s Last Line of Defence

DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi also produced one of the tournament’s finest individual displays.

Facing a powerful Colombia side featuring stars such as James Rodríguez and Luis Díaz, Mpasi repeatedly denied the opposition and kept his team in the contest.

Although DR Congo eventually lost 1-0 after Daniel Muñoz scored in the 76th minute, Mpasi finished with eight saves, ensuring the Leopards remained competitive despite spending long periods under pressure.

Eloy Room: The Record-Breaking ‘Mr Safe Hands’

If one goalkeeper has truly earned the nickname “Mr Safe Hands” at this World Cup, it is Curaçao’s Eloy Room.

The veteran goalkeeper produced a historic performance during Curaçao’s 0-0 draw with Ecuador, making 15 saves a record for a 90-minute World Cup match, according to Reuters.

Room’s incredible display not only secured Curaçao their first-ever World Cup point but also created one of the tournament’s most memorable goalkeeping moments.

What makes these performances special is not only the number of saves, but their impact on history.

Asare has helped Ghana move closer to the knockout stages. Vozinha has transformed Cabo Verde’s World Cup debut into a moment of national pride. Mpasi gave DR Congo hope against stronger opposition, while Room delivered a performance that will be remembered in World Cup history.

While attackers continue to attract the headlines, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is proving that heroes can also come from the goal line. The tournament’s defining moments are increasingly being shaped by those whose job is simple but demanding to say “no” when the world expects a goal.
