MONTERREY, Mexico – Morocco have continued their remarkable rise on the world stage after defeating the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout to reach the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Atlas Lions edged the Dutch 3-2 on penalties after a tense and entertaining match ended 1-1 after extra time, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerging as the hero by saving the Netherlands’ decisive fifth penalty.
Morocco secured victory when Ismael Saibari stepped up and calmly converted the winning spot-kick, sending the North Africans into a Round of 16 clash against co-hosts Canada men’s national soccer team in Houston on Saturday.
The dramatic encounter appeared to be slipping away from Morocco after the Netherlands took the lead in the second half through Cody Gakpo.
The Liverpool forward showed visible emotion after scoring, sinking to the ground before being surrounded by teammates following a difficult personal period after the death of his partner’s unborn child was confirmed days earlier.
However, Morocco refused to surrender and forced extra time in the first minute of stoppage time when Issa Diop headed home a cross from substitute Chemsdine Talbi to level the match.
Morocco Control the Contest
Despite the Netherlands enjoying long spells of possession, Morocco created the more dangerous chances in a physical and intense encounter that tested the discipline of both teams.
The Atlas Lions came close to opening the scoring in the 20th minute when Neil El Aynaoui directed an Achraf Hakimi corner towards goal, only for Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to make a brilliant reflex save.
Verbruggen was called into action again moments later, producing another impressive stop to deny Hakimi’s powerful strike.
The match was played with high intensity, with both sides committing strongly into challenges. Saibari was fortunate to avoid punishment after an incident involving Jan Paul van Hecke.
The Netherlands struggled to turn their possession into clear scoring opportunities, with their best chance of the first half coming when Micky van de Ven forced Bounou into a superb save from distance.
Late Drama Sends Match to Penalties
The second half continued at a high tempo, and the Netherlands appeared to gain control after coach Ronald Koeman introduced forward Wout Weghorst.
The substitute immediately influenced the game, flicking on a long ball that sent Crysencio Summerville forward before the attack ended with Gakpo finding the net.
The Dutch looked set for victory, but Morocco’s late equaliser changed the course of the match.
In extra time, Morocco almost completed the comeback when Soufiane Rahimi broke through on goal, only to be denied by another outstanding save from Verbruggen.
The Netherlands survived until the final whistle, but the penalty shootout belonged to Morocco.
Although El Aynaoui struck the crossbar with Morocco’s first penalty, Bounou’s crucial save against Summerville gave the Atlas Lions the advantage before Saibari delivered the winning moment.
The victory reinforces Morocco’s status among world football’s elite following their historic 2022 World Cup semi-final appearance and sets up another major test against Canada in the knockout stage.
