António Guterres calls for renewed commitment to equality, justice and inclusive development in honour of Mandela’s legacy.

NEW YORK – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on governments, institutions and citizens worldwide to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela by taking decisive action to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality and build more inclusive societies.
In his message marking Nelson Mandela International Day on Saturday, Guterres described the late South African statesman as “a towering figure of peace, reconciliation, justice and human rights” whose lifelong struggle continues to inspire the world.
Observed annually on July 18, Mandela’s birthday, the international day encourages people across the globe to dedicate 67 minutes to community service in recognition of the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for social justice, equality and human dignity.
The 2026 theme, “It’s Still in Our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequity,” highlights the urgent need for collective action to address growing global inequalities.
Guterres said Mandela believed that ending poverty was not an act of charity but a matter of justice and a shared responsibility for all.
“We live in a world where inequality is becoming entrenched, where wealth accrues disproportionately for a lucky few while millions struggle to meet basic needs such as food, water, shelter and education,” the UN chief said.
He noted that progress made in reducing poverty over recent decades has been undermined by armed conflicts, economic shocks and the growing impacts of climate change.
To reverse the trend, Guterres called for greater investment in decent jobs, universal healthcare, quality education and stronger social protection systems. He also urged increased financial support for developing countries, reforms to the global financial system and debt relief to accelerate sustainable development.
The UN Secretary-General further advocated for economies powered by renewable energy, saying the transition would deliver long-term benefits for both people and the planet.
Reflecting on Mandela’s enduring influence, Guterres said the former South African president’s belief in unity and collective action remains as relevant today as ever.
“The future is in our hands. Today and every day, let us carry forward Mandela’s vision of a just, inclusive, equal and peaceful world,” he said.
