Kenyan Youth Reportedly Detained in Libya as Migrant Smuggling Crisis Deepens

Reports have emerged that several young Somalis from Kenya are being held in illegal detention facilities in Libya, where human smugglers are allegedly detaining hundreds of migrants under harsh and inhumane conditions.

Those affected are said to include youths from Mandera County particularly Takaba, Banisa, and Elwak as well as Tarbaj in Wajir County. Additional reports also indicate that some of the victims originate from Garissa County, highlighting a wider regional impact across Northern Kenya.

The detainees are reportedly being held for ransom, with families in Kenya and relatives in the diaspora pressured to pay large sums in exchange for their release.

Many of the young people are believed to have been attempting the dangerous journey to Europe in search of better economic opportunities. However, along the way, some fall into the hands of smuggling networks operating through North Africa, where cases of abuse, exploitation, and unlawful detention have been widely reported.

Humanitarian observers continue to warn that irregular migration routes through Libya remain among the most dangerous, with migrants from the Horn of Africa increasingly exposed to trafficking networks and life-threatening conditions.
