GSU, DCI, ASTU and water cannon units deployed as police assure voters of a peaceful, free and fair election.

    ASAL POST | OL KALOU BY-ELECTION | July 15, 2026

NAIROBI – Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has deployed more than 1,000 police officers to provide security during Thursday’s Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, assuring residents that adequate measures have been put in place to guarantee a peaceful and credible poll.

Speaking during an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) briefing on Tuesday, Kanja said the deployment includes officers from the General Service Unit (GSU), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and other specialised security teams.

He said all 114 polling stations will be adequately secured, with a minimum of two police officers assigned to each polling station to safeguard voting materials, protect election officials and ensure the voting process proceeds without disruption.

In addition, Kanja revealed that security teams comprising at least 14 officers have been deployed to every polling station to strengthen security throughout the exercise.

To reinforce the operation, the Inspector General announced the deployment of four GSU platoons, four ASTU platoons, four water cannon units, and additional DCI officers tasked with intelligence gathering, investigations, arrests and prosecution of individuals involved in electoral offences.

“Our role is to ensure the people of Ol Kalou exercise their democratic right in a free, fair, peaceful and secure environment as provided for under the Constitution and the laws of Kenya,” Kanja said.

The enhanced security operation comes as the country prepares for the closely watched by-election, with police pledging to maintain law and order while safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
