Days After Being Barred from the FIFA World Cup by U.S. Authorities, CAF Referee of the Year Omar Artan Earns Prestigious UEFA Super Cup Final Assignment in Landmark Moment for Somalia and African Football.

MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a remarkable turnaround that has captured the attention of the global football community, Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup Final, just days after a controversial U.S. immigration decision denied him the opportunity to officiate at the FIFA World Cup.

The appointment represents one of the most significant achievements in the history of Somali football and a powerful statement from European football authorities in support of one of Africa’s most respected match officials.

    UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin

UEFA confirmed that Artan will take charge of the prestigious clash between UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA Europa League champions Aston Villa on August 12 in Salzburg, Austria.

The match is one of Europe’s most high-profile football fixtures and traditionally opens the continent’s elite club football season.

For many Somalis, the appointment is being viewed not only as a personal triumph for Artan but also as a moment of national pride and international recognition.

From World Cup Disappointment to European Recognition

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Artan’s World Cup dream was shattered.

The Somali referee had been selected by FIFA among the elite group of officials chosen to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

His selection had already made history, positioning him to become the first Somali referee ever appointed to football’s biggest tournament.

However, despite receiving FIFA’s endorsement, Artan was unable to participate after being denied entry into the United States due to what American authorities described as unspecified “vetting concerns.”

The decision sparked widespread criticism from football supporters, politicians, sports officials, and members of the Somali diaspora around the world.

Many questioned how one of FIFA’s officially appointed referees could be prevented from participating in the tournament.

Now, UEFA’s latest move is being widely interpreted as a strong show of confidence in Artan’s professionalism, integrity, and officiating excellence.

UEFA and CAF Unite Behind Somali Referee

According to UEFA, the appointment was made following consultations with the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) under a newly signed cooperation agreement between the two football bodies.

The partnership aims to strengthen collaboration in key areas including referee development, technical training, football governance, and talent exchange.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin praised Artan’s achievements and described him as one of the game’s emerging elite referees.

“Omar Artan is an excellent young but already experienced referee, who has proven himself at the highest competition level of the Confederation of African Football,” said Čeferin.

“Football is made to connect people, and UEFA wants to show its respect to Omar and his outstanding officiating skills, which had earned him such a prestigious nomination.”

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe also welcomed the appointment, describing it as recognition of Artan’s world-class ability and growing international reputation.

“Omar Artan has made Somalia and the entire people of the African continent extremely proud,” Motsepe said.

“His appointment is a recognition of his world-class refereeing ability and the international respect that he enjoys.”

A Rising Star in World Football

At just 34 years old, Artan has already established himself among Africa’s most accomplished football referees.

He has been on the FIFA International Referees List since 2018 and has officiated several major continental fixtures, including the CAF Champions League Final.

His impressive performances earned him the prestigious CAF Men’s Referee of the Year Award in 2025, making him one of the most respected match officials on the continent.

His rise through the ranks has become a source of inspiration for young Somali sports professionals seeking to compete on the global stage.

Football analysts say his UEFA Super Cup appointment further cements his position among the world’s elite referees.

A Historic First for Somalia and Africa

Artan’s appointment is expected to make him one of the first African referees to officiate a major UEFA final under the new UEFA-CAF cooperation framework.

The significance extends far beyond a single football match.

For Somalia, it represents another historic milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to rebuild its sporting reputation and showcase Somali excellence on the international stage.

For African football, it signals growing recognition of the continent’s refereeing talent at the highest levels of the game.

The appointment also reinforces football’s ability to transcend borders and unite people through merit, professionalism, and shared values.

    Turning Setback Into Triumph

Only days ago, Artan returned to Mogadishu after missing what would have been the biggest assignment of his career.

Today, he finds himself preparing for one of Europe’s most prestigious club football matches.

The journey from World Cup disappointment to UEFA recognition has transformed a painful setback into an inspiring story of resilience and perseverance.

For millions of Somalis, Omar Artan’s latest achievement sends a powerful message: setbacks may delay dreams, but they do not define them.

As he prepares to step onto the pitch in Salzburg before a global television audience, Artan will not only be representing himself but also Somalia, Africa, and the countless young people who see in his story proof that determination and excellence can open doors on the world stage.
