AFWEIN, GARISSA COUNTY – Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Wednesday led a major fundraising drive in Afwein, Garissa County, to support the construction of Jamia Mosque and Madrasatul Tawba, calling on residents to invest in religious institutions as foundations for moral values, education and community development.

The fundraiser, held at Afwein Primary School grounds, attracted political leaders, Islamic scholars, elders, business leaders and hundreds of residents, who made contributions towards the construction of the two community projects.

Addressing the gathering, Duale said mosques and madrasas play a critical role beyond serving as places of worship, describing them as institutions that nurture ethical leadership, strengthen families and promote peaceful coexistence.

“Religious institutions are the foundation of strong communities. They provide spiritual guidance, instill discipline and equip our young people with the values needed to become responsible and productive citizens,” Duale said.

The Cabinet Secretary encouraged residents to continue supporting community-driven development initiatives, saying the successful completion of the mosque and madrasa would benefit future generations.

He noted that investment in religious education complements government efforts to strengthen social cohesion, promote peace and empower young people with values that contribute to national development.

Calls for Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections

Duale also urged pastoralist communities and the wider Muslim community to remain united as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.

He said political unity and constructive engagement with the national government were essential in ensuring the region continued to benefit from development programmes, infrastructure investments and equitable resource allocation.

The Health CS called on residents to support President William Ruto, saying collaboration with the national government would help accelerate development across Northern Kenya.

    Community Rallies Behind Religious Projects

The fundraising exercise concluded with generous pledges from leaders, businesspeople and members of the public, marking a significant milestone towards the construction of Jamia Mosque and Madrasatul Tawba.

Organizers said the projects are expected to provide a modern place of worship and strengthen Islamic education for children and future generations within the community.

    Leaders Attend Fundraiser

Among leaders who attended the event were Lagdera MP Mohammed Hussein, Nominated MP Imulkheir Harun, several parliamentary aspirants from Lagdera and Dadaab, Members of the County Assembly led by Afwein MCA Hassan Geley, Garissa gubernatorial aspirants Ambassador Mohamed Shidiye and Ahmed Abass, as well as other regional leaders, religious scholars and community elders.

The event underscored the growing role of community-led fundraising initiatives in supporting religious, educational and social development projects across Garissa County.
