Mahmoud Ali Youssouf urges stronger regional cooperation, African-led solutions and institutional reforms to address continent’s growing challenges.
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has called for stronger regional coordination among African countries to address the continent’s complex security challenges and emerging economic pressures.
Speaking during the closing session of the 52nd Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC), Youssouf said closer collaboration between the African Union, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms (RMs) is essential in advancing peace, security, integration and sustainable development across Africa.
The AU Chairperson acknowledged that the continent continues to face evolving threats, including security crises, health emergencies and economic disruptions, but expressed confidence that collective action and political commitment from Member States would enable Africa to overcome these challenges.
“The continent continues to face complex and evolving challenges,” Youssouf said, emphasizing the need for stronger cooperation and African-led responses.
He noted that improved coordination between continental and regional institutions would strengthen the implementation of policies aimed at promoting peace, economic growth and regional integration.
AU Highlights Response to Ebola Outbreak
Youssouf also highlighted Africa’s efforts in responding to the Ebola outbreak, praising the political commitment and support mobilized through a recent High-Level Virtual Summit chaired by Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye, the AU Champion on Ebola.
He commended AU Member States for providing financial and logistical assistance to affected countries and recognized the Democratic Republic of the Congo for committing national resources towards controlling the outbreak.
Economic Pressures Remain a Concern
Beyond security and health challenges, the AU Chairperson pointed to growing global economic pressures affecting African economies.
He said disruptions to maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz had increased pressure on global energy markets and affected supply chains, creating additional economic challenges for countries across the continent.
Youssouf expressed hope that the recently announced ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran would contribute to easing regional tensions, restoring stability and reducing economic pressure linked to global trade routes.
AU Pushes Institutional Reforms
The AU Commission Chairperson praised members of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee for their commitment and constructive engagement during the session, saying their efforts contributed to progress on key continental priorities.
He also commended PRC Chair Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe for his leadership in guiding the committee’s work.
In his closing remarks, Youssouf urged AU Member States to continue supporting institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the organization’s financial sustainability and enhancing the Commission’s ability to deliver on its mandate.
He reiterated that stronger partnerships and collective responsibility remain critical in building a more peaceful, integrated and economically resilient Africa.
