New regional bloc aims to protect global shipping routes, enhance maritime security and strengthen cooperation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

HORN OF AFRICA | ASAL POST

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, August 5, 2026 – Saudi Arabia has launched a new regional maritime security alliance bringing together eight countries bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, with Somalia joining the coalition in a move aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and protecting one of the world’s busiest international shipping corridors.

The new alliance comprises Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Jordan and Yemen, and is expected to enhance coordination on maritime security, intelligence sharing and the protection of commercial and energy shipping routes.

The initiative comes amid growing security concerns in the Red Sea following repeated attacks on commercial vessels, which have disrupted global trade and prompted regional states to strengthen military and security cooperation.

Saudi Arabia said the coalition will focus on safeguarding freedom of navigation, improving intelligence sharing, expanding joint maritime operations and strengthening collaboration among countries responsible for securing the strategic waterway.

The Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden are among the world’s most critical maritime trade routes, connecting Europe, Asia and Africa. A significant portion of global commerce, including oil and energy supplies, passes through the corridor each year.

Somalia’s participation places the country at the centre of a broader regional maritime security framework as it continues to work with international partners to secure its extensive coastline along the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

The Horn of Africa nation plays a strategic role in efforts to combat piracy, illegal maritime activities, arms trafficking and security threats posed by armed groups operating in the region.

The coalition builds on earlier security discussions held in Riyadh, where military officials from dozens of countries and representatives of the European Union explored ways of strengthening international cooperation to secure vital sea lanes.

Saudi Arabia is expected to host the alliance’s headquarters and lead the development of operational frameworks for joint maritime activities among member states.

The initiative also forms part of Riyadh’s broader strategy to coordinate regional responses to attacks linked to Yemen’s Houthi movement, whose assaults on commercial vessels have heightened security concerns and forced several international shipping companies to reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, increasing transport costs and delivery times.

By bringing together countries on both sides of the Red Sea, the alliance seeks to establish a unified regional approach to maritime security while protecting international navigation and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of global trade.

The formation of the coalition marks another milestone in efforts to strengthen collective security across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, with member states expected to deepen long-term cooperation in safeguarding one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
