Mr. Jamal Mohamed, Chief Officer, Donor and Partner Coordination – County Government of Garissa in a past event.

GARISSA, Kenya – When Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan walks onto the pitch in Salzburg, Austria, to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup Final, he will carry with him a story that extends far beyond football.

His appointment comes shortly after his controversial exclusion from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a decision that generated international debate and criticism from many observers who argued that it contradicted the tournament’s message of inclusion and global unity.

However, as Artan prepares to take charge of one of European football’s most prestigious fixtures, his selection represents something much bigger – a story of perseverance, professionalism, recognition, and the ability of sport to overcome barriers that often divide societies.

A Journey Built Through Determination and Excellence

Artan’s rise to the highest levels of international refereeing is remarkable because it was achieved through personal dedication, discipline, and commitment.

He did not emerge from a country traditionally associated with advanced football infrastructure or major investment in sports development. Instead, his journey has been built through hard work, consistent performance, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Match after match and tournament after tournament, Artan established himself as a referee known for competence, fairness, and professionalism. His performances earned recognition from both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and international football authorities.

His journey demonstrates a powerful lesson: talent can emerge from any environment when individuals are given the opportunity to compete and prove themselves.

    A Historic Moment for Somalia

Artan’s initial selection as part of the FIFA World Cup 2026 officiating team was already a historic achievement.

It represented the first time a Somali referee was set to participate at football’s biggest global tournament, creating a moment of immense pride for Somalia and millions of Somalis across the world.

For young Somalis, both at home and in the diaspora, his achievement became a symbol of possibility proof that international recognition can be achieved regardless of background or origin.

His story challenged long-standing narratives that often associate Somalia only with conflict, insecurity, and humanitarian challenges.

Instead, Artan presented another image of Somalia: a country capable of producing excellence, professionalism, and global talent.

    UEFA Recognition: Merit Beyond Borders

Following his World Cup disappointment, UEFA’s decision to appoint Artan as referee for the UEFA Super Cup has been viewed by many as a recognition of his ability and achievements.

The UEFA Super Cup brings together the winners of Europe’s top club competitions and is among the most prestigious matches in world football.

Officials selected for such fixtures are not chosen symbolically. They are selected because they have demonstrated exceptional ability, consistency, and professionalism at the highest level.

Artan’s appointment confirms that his reputation was built through performance and merit.

UEFA has placed him where his ability deserves.

Salzburg: A Powerful Symbol of Change

The location of the match also carries historical significance.

Salzburg occupies a unique place in modern history as the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, whose ideology of racial superiority and exclusion contributed to one of humanity’s darkest periods.

Nearly a century later, a Somali referee will stand at the centre of a major European sporting event, entrusted with ensuring fairness in a global competition watched by millions.

    The contrast is powerful.

It reflects the progress humanity has made from a period when race, ethnicity, and background were used to determine a person’s opportunities and worth.

This does not mean discrimination has disappeared completely. Racism and inequality remain challenges in many parts of the world. However, moments like Artan’s appointment demonstrate the continuing power of merit and inclusion.

During my visit to Austria in 2014, I observed that representation of Black personalities in mainstream advertising was limited, with only a few visible examples such as footballer David Alaba. Today, the presence of an African referee at the centre of a major European football final represents a different and evolving picture.

A Lesson for Somalia: Institutions Must Reward Merit

For decades, Somalia’s international image has often been shaped by stories of conflict, political instability, and humanitarian challenges.

While these realities remain part of the country’s journey, they do not represent the full story of Somalia and its people.

Across the world, Somalis continue to excel in education, business, public service, culture, and sport.

Omar Artan’s rise provides a powerful reminder that excellence exists within Somali society and deserves recognition.

His journey also offers an important lesson for political leaders and institutions: progress is achieved when competence, integrity, and performance are valued above personal connections, political loyalty, or social affiliations.

Artan did not reach the UEFA Super Cup through influence or privilege. He reached it through ability.

His success reflects a fundamental principle of nation-building strong institutions are built by empowering capable individuals and rewarding excellence.

    A Story That Transcends Football

    None

Omar Artan’s story is not only about refereeing a football match.

    It is about overcoming stereotypes.
    It is about creating opportunities.
It is about the power of professionalism.
It is about how talent can unite people beyond politics and borders.

His journey reminds young people everywhere that global recognition is possible through dedication and hard work.

As he prepares to officiate the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg, Omar Artan carries the hopes of many — not only football supporters, but also those who believe in fairness, opportunity, and the limitless potential of human talent.

Above all, his story demonstrates one powerful message:

Merit can achieve what politics often struggles to accomplish bringing people together.
