GARISSA, Kenya – Political stakeholders in Garissa County have intensified preparations ahead of the upcoming electoral processes following a five-day capacity-building forum aimed at enhancing electoral readiness, strengthening political party structures and promoting inclusive democratic participation.
The forum, held at Tana Garden Hotel in Garissa, brought together political party county officials, women leaders, persons with disabilities (PWDs), community elders and representatives from key government institutions for comprehensive training on electoral preparedness and democratic governance.
The capacity-building workshop was spearheaded by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) through its North Eastern Regional Office, led by Ms. Ifrah Issak Ibrahim, North Eastern Registrar of Political Parties, with support from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Garissa Township Returning Officer, who engaged participants on electoral processes and preparedness.

The training focused on equipping Garissa political actors with knowledge on political party compliance requirements, legal frameworks governing parties, civic responsibilities, conflict resolution mechanisms and the importance of inclusive participation within political institutions.
Speaking during the forum, Ms. Ifrah Issak Ibrahim emphasized the importance of empowering local political actors with the necessary knowledge and skills to promote peaceful, transparent and accountable democratic processes.
“Strong political parties are the foundation of a strong democracy. Through this capacity-building programme, we are equipping political party officials and stakeholders in Garissa with the understanding required to comply with electoral laws, strengthen internal party structures and promote inclusivity in political participation.”

She added that the engagement provides an important platform for stakeholders to share experiences, identify challenges affecting political organization at the county level and develop solutions that will contribute to credible electoral processes.
The workshop brought together diverse groups including political party office holders, women leaders, persons living with disabilities and community elders, reflecting efforts to ensure that all sections of society are represented in Kenya’s democratic journey.

Representatives from the National Government Administration Office, through the Garissa County Commissioner’s office, also participated in the forum, highlighting the importance of collaboration between state institutions and political stakeholders in promoting peaceful elections and good governance.
The IEBC representative from Garissa Township provided insights into electoral processes, voter engagement and the role political actors play in supporting a smooth and credible election environment.

The Garissa forum formed part of a nationwide ORPP-led capacity-building initiative conducted across several regions, aimed at strengthening political party systems and promoting democratic ideals ahead of the 2027 General Election.
For Garissa County, the engagement comes at a critical time as political actors continue to prepare their structures, improve coordination and promote wider participation among communities, women, youth and marginalized groups.

The initiative underscores the growing importance of informed political leadership, inclusive participation and strong institutional partnerships in shaping a peaceful and credible electoral future for Garissa County.
