The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a 24-hour weather forecast warning of rainfall, isolated thunderstorms and strong winds across several parts of the country, with a particular focus on Northern Kenya and the Coast.
The forecast covers the period from 9pm on Sunday, September 20, to 9pm on Monday, September 21, 2026, with partly cloudy mornings, sunny intervals during the day and chances of light showers and isolated thunderstorms in several areas.
Northern Kenya under close watch
Several counties in Northern and northeastern Kenya are expected to experience varying weather conditions.
Garissa and Tana River are among the counties where rainfall is expected in some areas, while Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Isiolo and Turkana are expected to experience strong winds alongside generally partly cloudy conditions.
KMD forecasts strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) in parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera and Wajir, as well as Tana River and several other counties.
Mandera is expected to record a maximum temperature of 35°C, while Turkana could reach 37°C, making the northeastern and northwestern ASAL areas among the warmest parts of the country.
Rainfall expected across several regions
Beyond Northern Kenya, KMD expects rainfall in parts of Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Kericho, Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, Kisumu, Baringo, Bomet, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Migori, Nyamira, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nairobi, Embu, Meru and Nyeri.
The Coastal region is expected to receive enhanced rainfall, particularly in Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi.
Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly where heavy rainfall or thunderstorms develop.
Western Kenya and the Rift Valley
Across Western Kenya, partly cloudy mornings are expected, followed by sunny intervals and chances of showers or isolated thunderstorms later in the day.
Homa Bay is expected to record temperatures of up to 32°C, while Busia and Kisumu could reach 31°C. Kakamega and Bungoma are forecast to reach about 30°C.
In the Rift Valley, Bomet and Kericho are expected to record maximum temperatures of approximately 26°C and 25°C, respectively, while Nakuru and neighbouring areas could also experience rainfall.
Nairobi and Central Kenya
In Nairobi and parts of Central Kenya, residents can expect generally partly cloudy conditions with periods of sunshine and a possibility of light showers.
Nairobi is forecast to record a maximum temperature of about 22°C and a minimum of 15°C.
Rainfall is also expected in parts of Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Embu and Meru.
Coast remains under enhanced rainfall alert
The Coast is among the areas receiving particular attention in the latest forecast.
KMD expects enhanced rainfall over Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi, with showers potentially occurring in different parts of the region.
Communities, motorists and residents in low-lying areas are encouraged to remain alert where rainfall becomes persistent or intense.
El Niño outlook raises preparedness concerns
The latest short-term forecast comes as Kenya continues preparations for the October–December 2026 rainfall season, amid an elevated El Niño outlook.
The Government has warned of potential weather-related risks including flash floods, landslides, disease outbreaks, displacement and damage to critical infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
For Northern Kenya, where communities are heavily dependent on livestock and are exposed to both drought and flood risks, changing rainfall patterns remain particularly significant.
KMD’s forecasts are subject to change as weather systems evolve, and residents are encouraged to follow subsequent official weather updates and advisories.
