County begins countdown to national event as stakeholders prepare to showcase impact of devolution and enhance citizen engagement.
GARISSA TOWNSHIP, KENYA – Garissa County has officially began preparations to host the 2026 Devolution Sensitization Week (DSW), following the decision by the Council of Governors to stage this year’s national event in the county.
The event, scheduled for 20th to 24th July 2026, is expected to bring together county governments, national government institutions, development partners and citizens for a week-long engagement focused on devolution, service delivery and public participation.
On Monday, 29th June 2026, a Council of Governors’ recce team visited Garissa County to assess the level of preparedness and discuss plans ahead of the national event.
The team was received by Garissa County Chief of Staff Abdullahi Gedi, who chaired a high-level planning meeting attended by senior representatives from various county departments involved in coordinating the preparations.
The annual Devolution Sensitization Week provides an important platform for citizens to interact directly with government institutions and access various services while learning more about the role of devolved governments.
During the event, residents will have an opportunity to participate in public forums, access legal, health and land services, seek clarification on government programmes and provide feedback on the delivery of devolved functions.
Speaking during the planning meeting, Chief of Staff Abdullahi Gedi said hosting the national event presents Garissa with an opportunity to highlight the county’s achievements under the devolved system of governance.
He said the county government is committed to working closely with the Council of Governors and other stakeholders to ensure the event is successfully delivered.
“We appreciate the Council of Governors for selecting Garissa to host this important national event. We are fully committed to working with all partners to ensure successful preparations and a memorable Devolution Sensitization Week,” Gedi said.
The hosting of the event is expected to place Garissa at the centre of national conversations on devolution, strengthening service delivery, citizen participation and the continued role of counties in Kenya’s governance structure.
County officials said preparations will continue in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure residents and visitors have a meaningful experience during the week-long event.
