Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has broken his silence over the escalating controversy surrounding the multi-billion-shilling Talanta Sports City Stadium project, distancing himself from the reported KSh10.85 billion cost inflation.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Namwamba maintained that the Talanta Stadium project was properly initiated and structured during his tenure, insisting that it was in “perfectly good health” when he left office.
Ababu Cites Proverb Amid Mounting Pressure
Quoting an Abanyala proverb “okhusakandia akhura alayi” Namwamba suggested that what appears to be turmoil may instead serve as his vindication.
He implied that the financial irregularities currently under scrutiny occurred after his departure from the Ministry of Sports.
Auditor-General Flags Major Cost Variation
The remarks come in the wake of a damning audit report by Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu, which revealed an “unsupported price variation” of KSh10.85 billion in the construction of Talanta Sports City.
According to the audit, the National Treasury had approved KSh35 billion for the project. However, the final contract signed by the Ministry of Defense stood at KSh45.85 billion significantly higher than the approved budget.
The stadium, envisioned as a flagship venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is being financed through a bond floated on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, with approximately KSh3.4 billion scheduled for payment every six months from the Sports and Arts Social Development Fund (SASDF).
“Those Responsible Must Be Held Accountable”
Namwamba called for full accountability, stating that anyone responsible for any loss of public funds must face the consequences.
As scrutiny intensifies, the Talanta Stadium project continues to draw national attention amid Kenya’s preparations to co-host AFCON 2027.
