Late drama in Toronto sees Germany end years of World Cup disappointment with stunning comeback victory over Ivory Coast.

TORONTO, CANADA – Germany booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage after staging a dramatic comeback to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in a thrilling Group Stage encounter on Saturday.

The victory marked Germany’s first qualification for the World Cup knockout phase since lifting the trophy in 2014, ending disappointing campaigns at the previous two editions of the tournament where they failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Substitute Deniz Undav emerged as Germany’s match-winner, scoring twice, including a dramatic stoppage-time winner four minutes into added time that sent the largely pro-German crowd of 43,000 at the Toronto stadium into celebration.

The result also eased pressure on head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who had faced scrutiny after Germany’s recent struggles on the global stage.

Ivory Coast started strongly and took the lead in the 30th minute through Franck Kessie, who finished from close range after impressive build-up play from teenage sensation Yan Diomande.

Diomande’s performance once again highlighted his growing reputation, with several top European clubs reportedly monitoring the young Ivorian talent.

Germany thought they had taken the lead earlier in the match after Aleksandar Pavlovic turned in Nathaniel Brown’s corner in the 21st minute, but the goal was ruled out after Paraguayan referee Juan Gabriel Benitez judged Pavlovic to have fouled Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

The Germans suffered another setback before halftime when Kai Havertz appeared to have scored, only for the effort to be cancelled after a foul by Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala.

However, Germany returned from the break with renewed intensity, dominating possession and applying relentless pressure on the Ivorian defence.

Their persistence paid off in the 63rd minute when Undav volleyed home a well-delivered cross from Nadiem Amiri to level the match.

With time running out, Germany continued pushing forward and were rewarded when Undav struck again deep into stoppage time to complete a memorable comeback.

The win sparked celebrations among German players and supporters as the team finally overcame its recent World Cup struggles.

Germany defender Jonathan Tah praised the team’s determination and unity after the match.

“Winning mentality, team spirit we had exactly what you need to be successful in a tournament. We never gave up, we kept going no matter what,” Tah said.

He also singled out Undav for his decisive contribution, describing his performance as outstanding.

For Ivory Coast, the defeat leaves their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. The African side has never reached the knockout stage of the tournament but can still advance if they secure victory against debutants Curaçao in their final group match.

Germany’s comeback victory sends a strong message that the four-time world champions remain serious contenders as they continue their pursuit of another historic World Cup triumph.
